Spring Fever

Vintage-Polka-Dot-Dress

Even though we needed the snow, I’m getting that Spring feeling.  Another picture from the Midwest Vintage Clothing show.  This vintage polka dot dress just looks like a breath of fresh air.

The-Bongo-Room

Catholicism is alive and well at Holy Trinity Church.  The church was built in 1905 to relieve overcrowding at St. Stanislaus Kostka just down the street.  Though it appears to be somewhat of a destination church, hundreds of devoted parishioners were in attendance.  In fact, it was the largest crowd we have witnessed so far attending a Sunday mass.  My grandparents would have understood every word of the Homily today and sadly, because the mass was said in Polish, the only word I recognized was “Amen”.  It did allow me to contemplate how my grandparents felt as immigrants in our country.  Both learned to speak fluent English, though they preferred to converse in Polish.  Hearing the language spoken again this morning brought back many fond memories of them.  The church itself has been totally refurbished.  It is elaborately decorated and the mural paintings overhead are magnificent.  I am hoping to go back someday for a tour of the catacombs beneath the church.  Afterwards, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast at The Bongo Room in Wicker Park.  Upon the advice of our hostess, I order the BLT Eggs Benedict.  Best in the City, hands down.

It was a feast for the eyes all day long at the Midwest Vintage Clothing Show held in Elgin today.  I was way too busy shopping to stop and take pictures, so the above are a very small sampling of what I saw; dresses, furs, jewelry, purses, shoes, shoes and more shoes.   There were wonderful samples from the Victorian Era through the 1990’s.  This year there was much more in menswear and believe me, bow ties are definitely making a come back.  My purchases included a lovely mother of pearl hair clip, a large brooch and a cute black alligator purse.  Everyone dresses to the Nine’s and even I wore my beaded Japan collar. I spend as much time people watching as I do perusing the clothing.  I’m just so glad I made it to this walking fashion show.

Antique Garnet Initials

Antique-Garnet-Initials

Today was the 57th Emmanuel Episcopal Church Antique Show.  It was a chance to see and say hello to many of my favorite dealers.  The antique garnet initial pins made at the turn of the century were wonderful.   I just wish my name started with an E , A or V.  You still have a chance to get there as they are open tomorrow from 10am to 4pm.  Go!

My everyday glasses are antique Westmoreland EAPG tumblers from 1908.  I use them with my daily green smoothie.  This one happens to contain spinach, a banana, golden flax seed, ice and some almond milk.  A healthy start to the day.  I also use a Vita-Mix, an expensive purchase that was worth every penny and I couldn’t live without it.  I am always on the hunt for these tumblers, so if you see one anywhere, let me know.

Master Bath Renovation

Master-Bath-Before

When we purchased our house 16 years ago, the master bath had been remuddled by the previous owners.  It was extremely outdated, the closets were small, it had one sink and a whirlpool which was only used to catch laundry.  After considering over 12 different drawings for the space, we chose the plan below.

Now brace yourself, below are the before and after pictures.

We are not quite done yet, as it still needs a little styling and window treatments, but for now, it’s just perfect.  Sometimes I can hardly believe it is the same space.  Separate sinks and closets make for a very happy marriage here.

Milk-and-Honey

Today, continuing our journey to visit the Polish Catholic Cathedrals, we attended the Polish mother church of Chicago, St. Stanislaus Kostka.  Built between 1871 and 1881, the church has seen better days.  We were quite surprised upon entering the church to find it devoid of pews and set up with metal folding chairs.  The massive pipe organ was silent.  We also missed the ritual of the priest entering and leaving via the main isle.  The sermon surrounding the Pope’s decision to abdicate, however, was thought provoking.  Afterwards, we tried breakfast at the Milk & Honey Cafe in Wicker Park.  Loved the Orange Brioche French Toast and Huevos Rancheros they were excellent.

Bringing classic back.  Peter Pan collars have been around forever and are making a come back with the my daughter’s generation.  I prefer to look for the vintage beaded collars from Japan over the new ones featured at Anthropologie.    Next weekend, you will find me at the Midwest Vintage Clothing, Jewelry & Textile Show held at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin, Illinois.  It is definitely a fashion show you don’t want to miss and yes, I will be wearing my new vintage find.

My husband reads this Blog sporadically so I am betting I am safe revealing his Valentine’s Day surprise:  Red Velvet Rum Cake that I made myself.    The fact that I made it is the real surprise.  My husband LOVES rum cake and I’m sure he is not expecting it in a heart shape.  I found the cute Nordic Ware pan and a modified Red Velvet Cake recipe online.  Don’t you just love Blogland?  Anyway, it is sitting on one of my vintage cake stands that has a rum well which holds extra rum that the cake will absorb.  This year we are skipping the fancy dinner and heading out to see the new Bruce Willis movie; Die Harder.  Rum Cake today, Sports Illustrated Swim Suit edition arrived yesterday and Die Harder tonight, my husband is having a banner week.  Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours.
