My 24 year old daughter surprised me with tickets for just the two of us to attend The Nutcracker the day after Christmas.  It was the 25th anniversary show of the Joffrey Ballet’s performance with the Chicago Philharmonic orchestra.  She was 7 the last time we saw the show together.  We attended the matinee performance which was filled with mothers and daughters of all ages then headed down Michigan avenue for a stroll with all the other after Christmas shoppers.  What a treat.  Thanks Elle Belle.

Chicago’s One of a Kind Show

It’s that time of year again for the 2012 Chicago One of a Kind Show.  Erin, from Just Grand, and I wouldn’t miss it.  The picture above is from the 2006 show guide cover.  That year, the featured Christmas ornament booth was the best.  I can’t wait to go and get inspired for the holidays, visit some of my favorite creative vendors and shop for my peeps.  It is a holiday shopping day that we look forward to all year.  I’ll report back with my favorite picks.

Today I met Erin from Just Grand for a field trip at the Art Institute of Chicago to visit the newly expanded gallery for the Arthur Rubloff Collection of Glass Paperweights.  My iPhone pictures cannot possibly capture the beauty of these objects of art.  It is a must see for a paperweight collector and a do see for anyone with a love of glass.  Which two do you think were my favorites?

The Steve Harvey Show

We went to the taping of The Steve Harvey Show today.  He is the author of “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” as well as the host of Family Feud.    Steve was a very funny, cordial entertainer.  A lovely day spent with delightful women and yet, another perk to living in Chicago.  The show is only 6 weeks old and the producers appear to be finding their way, but tickets are free for now, so if you get a chance, go.

Chicago Air and Water Show

The Chicago Air and Water Show was this past weekend.  Every now and then, I can do something that does not involve antiques.  The last time I saw this show we were in our twenties, living in Lincoln Park and dating.   Back again, it did not disappoint.  We loved seeing the Golden Knight parachute jumpers and the crowd favorite Blue Angels while sitting on North Beach.  The weather? Absolutely picture perfect.

Printers Row Book Fair Part 2

You could not have asked for a better day for the Printers Row Book Fair.  The weather was absolutely delightful.  Everyone looked as if they were out on a safari hunt donned with hats, goggles and in search of that elusive book.  We bought a ton.  Yet, I still didn’t find the one book I was seeking.  Maybe next year.

There is also a fair amount of antique and collectibles at the book fair.  Vintage posters, advertising and postcards as well as the printers blocks which I adored.

And as I was searching for the knitting books, lo and behold, up popped Loopy Yarns.  I had a chance to run in, cool off and buy a sleeveless shell pattern to knit this summer.  It’s a banner day when all of my favorite worlds collide in one location!

If you have never been to the book fair, you need to put it on your bucket list and go.  Everyone can find at least one book they must read.  And thanks to my lovely daughter who called to remind me, tomorrow we will be spending the day at the Old Town Art Fair.  Yeah Summer!

Printers Row Book Fair

The Printers Row Book Fair is this Saturday and Sunday.  We’re going.  There will be 100′s of exhibitors, booksellers of old and new along with author appearances, readings and signings.  Even though I read on my Kindle and iPad, they will never be able to replace the tactile experience of holding a book in hand.  Definitely an event that makes me so thankful that I live in Chicago.  Maura, there is still time to get here!

Chicago Antiques Fair

This is one show I try not to miss.  I go to listen and learn.  No one person can possibly know everything there is to know about antiques.  Each of these exhibitors are passionate about what they sell and collect.  I love people with a passion.  They are the best to learn from.  So, you know where I’ll be this weekend.
